Ancien policier, Alex connaît la ville mieux que personne. Ses rues, ses angles morts, ses mensonges. Brisé par son licenciement, englouti par l’alcool et abandonné par les siens, il survit désormais dans les centres d’accueil et les recoins glacés du bitume. Parmi les visages cabossés et les vies invisibles, il a trouvé une nouvelle famille, qui lutte pour tenir jusqu’au matin. Mais quand certains d’entre eux cessent de se présenter au rendez-vous habituel, un banc, une bouche de métro, le dessous d'un pont, Alex s'inquiète. La police ne voit rien. La ville détourne le regard. Sous les couches de crasse et de honte, l’ancien flic n’a jamais cessé d’en être un. Et dans l’ombre, quelqu’un semble avoir compris que faire disparaître des sans-abri, c’est tuer ceux dont on a déjà gommé l'existence.
