Alors qu’approche la saison des grandes compétitions de surf à Teahupo’o, un jeune surfeur local est retrouvé mort près d’un récif corallien décimé. Le médecin légiste conclut à la noyade accidentelle, mais Maeva To’ofa, une brillante biologiste marine, constate des anomalies inquiétantes sur le corps et dans l’eau du lagon. En parallèle, Tino Fareura, journaliste d’investigation polynésien travaillant pour une agence de presse en métropole, revient à Tahiti suite à des rumeurs de fuites radioactives provenant d’anciens sites d’essais nucléaires éloignés. Il soupçonne un lien entre la pollution observée dans certaines zones du lagon et de mystérieux contrats passés entre des acteurs privés et des décideurs locaux. Lorsque Maeva et Tino croisent leurs indices, ils découvrent qu’une société d’exploitation minière sous-marine, Océanex, mène des forages illégaux à proximité d’un site potentiellement contaminé. Le projet, tenu secret, bénéficierait du soutien de politiciens locaux et de hauts fonctionnaires, qui misent sur les ressources rares du sous-sol polynésien. Au fil de leur enquête, ils s’enfoncent dans un véritable labyrinthe de mensonges et de corruptions, mettant en danger la faune marine… et la population même de l’île. Pressions, menaces, disparitions inquiétantes : la quête de vérité de Maeva et Tino les mènera au cœur d’une machination où la beauté turquoise de Tahiti cache un passé empoisonné… et un présent tout aussi toxique.
